The Himeji Daiichi Hospital's new building, designed by Tetsuya Matsumoto, stands as a testament to modernity and innovation in healthcare architecture. The design's inspiration stems from the site's unique shape and its angular position relative to the main road, leading to a layered facade that captures the attention of passersby. The dominance of white in the design is a deliberate choice, reflecting the importance of cleanliness and hygiene in a medical setting, while also considering the psychological impact on patients.
Distinct from traditional hospital structures, Daiichi's design introduces a porous facade that imparts a sense of lightness and modernity. The building's seven-story framework is constructed with a metallic grid, ensuring resilience in earthquake-prone Japan. The exterior is adorned with cladding panels from KMEW, while the interior boasts a variety of materials, including vinyl floor, wooden panels, and mirrors, contributing to the facility's welcoming atmosphere.
With a gross built area of 2239sqm, the hospital's dimensions are meticulously planned to accommodate a full range of medical services. The ground floor welcomes visitors with a reception and waiting area, leading to consulting rooms, medical imaging, and emergency services. The upper floors house dialysis rooms, operating areas, inpatient rooms, and rehabilitation facilities, all designed to optimize patient care and comfort.
The design's realization faced significant challenges, balancing a tight budget with the ambition to create a space that leans more towards hospitality than a traditional medical environment. The project also had to navigate strict Japanese regulations for earthquake and fire safety, all while working within an irregularly shaped land area. Despite these hurdles, the design team successfully delivered a 100-bed hospital that meets the highest standards of functionality and patient well-being.
Matsumoto's Daiichi Hospital design has not only transformed the skyline of Himeji City but also the experience of its patients and visitors. The hospital's "open book" facade serves as a beacon, signaling a new era of healthcare design that prioritizes human-centric spaces. The project's completion in March 2023 marks a significant milestone in the evolution of hospital architecture, where design excellence meets the demands of modern healthcare.
The Daiichi Hospital's architectural prowess has been recognized with a Silver A' Design Award in Architecture, Building, and Structure Design in 2024. This accolade underscores the project's exceptional design quality, innovation, and contribution to creating positive experiences in healthcare environments.
